Compass Section Description: A compass is made from a magnetic needle. Magnets have two different poles. There is a north pole and the south pole. The north pole attracts the south pole, but repels the north (in other words, “Opposites attract”). If you look at the north pole on a compass (red), it points towards the earth's geographic north and the south pole points towards the earth’s geographic south. If you bring a magnet close to a compass it will either attract or repel. It all depends on the north and south pole you are trying to connect it to. Obviously the earth does not have a big bar magnet in the center of it. Instead it has a swirl motion of molten iron in the outer core of the earth. A magnetic field is the region around the magnetic object or it’s the moving electrical force from the magnetic’s acts. Even though we didn’t add liquid into our compass, liquid helps the compass’s needle steady itself quicker. Liquid also makes precise readings more possible.
