Week 8: Problem of the Week: Patterns
1. Yes we can use all these pieces together to make a stair like structure.
- The process we used was to start off by finding the equation first in order to create a staircase. We have to take the equation and simplify it. Solve the simplified equation in order to find how many rows we have.
- The solution is 47 rows to get 1176 slots. I got this by solving one and getting 1385 at start.
- This is simple because there are many ways to solve it to get the answer that we are hoping for which is how we were able to solve the question at hand.
2. Can we use 2628 toothpicks to make a stair like structure?
- The process is that we found the question and re-wrote it in order to understand it better. We have to make a equation and simplify it then we simplified that equation in order to find how many rows we have once again.
- The solution is that we got 92 rows that equals 2,652 by getting 1,620 at the start and adding more to it.
- This is simple because there are many way to solve a problem such as this and that is how we get the answer we are looking for by putting into a simple equation.
3. Consider a stair like structure with 98 squares. How many squares does your structure have?
- The Process is that we used the question to understand it better and we only know that from the question we have 98 squares total. We need to know how many square like structures we can use to see if it will work or not. Due to the fact that it can't build a stair case, instead in order to get the answer that is right 98 we had to have done something different.
- The solution is 85.5 is the closest we got to the original project. It is not the closest number to complete the stair case.
- This one was harder because it had already given us the stair like cases, but to find if it correct was the hard part. We then decided that it would be best to rethink the problem and solve it right the first time.
4. What it is the minimum number of steps you can have to build the toothpicks? What is the maximum number of steps my structure can have in total?
- The process is that we had to estimate any number close to the original minimum of 2,345 and to estimate the original number of 8,789 to get the maximum number.
- The solution is to the minimum number of toothpicks to build a stair like strcuture is 2,348 which is the minimum of that total. After multiplying this by 2 we got the maximum of 4,694 in total of toothpicks.
- This is medium. Hard yet not hard at all, at first it was complicated, but then it slowly got easier as I figured out what to do.
